The 2018 Sevenstar Contest Cup, sailed over the first weekend in June off Medemblik, Holland, brought together a strong fleet of 31 Contest yachts to celebrate the 15th running of this single class annual event hosted by the constructor of these highly regarded Dutch-built performance bluewater yachts.
With racing split between three classes, the two-day event is styled also to encourage participation of sailors less inclined to race so includes touring and more leisurely activities, plus of course a good mix of shoreside entertainment.
Once a mist had lifted and the breeze filled in on Race Day 1, three good races were fought for in a Force 3-4 northerly, with in each class the same boats taking 1st in all races: Tessa in the dedicated Contest 42CS fleet of six; Irina, a recently refitted Contest 60CS, in the 13-strong 40ft and above fleet; while in the below 40ft fleet of five, it was the turn of Contest 31HT Skylla to take top spot in her class for the day. And with the lightest breezes for Race Day 2 permitting the start of just one abandoned race, that’s exactly how the prize-giving played out for the 160 participants who over the weekend had enjoyed also the evening charms of Medemblik’s renowned Restaurant Meijer’s and characterful Café Brakeboer.
The Sevenstar Contest Cup precedes by two weeks the constructor’s second summer rally and regatta, the Sevenstar Contest Meeting Mallorca (14-16 June) for owners of Contest yachts sailing the Mediterranean.
Next year’s Sevenstar Contest Cup will be held 31 May, 1 - 2 June 2019.
