A spectacular feeling

Jan-Berend van der Heide, foreman at Vitters Shipyard, has a passion for sailing yachts that is and has always been reflected in every aspect of his life.

“My grandpa was a boat builder in the village of Heeg, Friesland. I spent my childhood between the oak hulls at his yard. We built my first rowing dinghy when I was seven, and as soon as I was old enough he helped me upgrade it with a mast and a sail. This was the beginning of my love affair with sailing and the construction of sailing boats, which I have fully indulged during my work at Vitters. One of my favourite things is passing on my knowledge to the next generation of craftsmen at the yard.

I learned about the forces endured by normal sailing boats a long time ago, but working with the loads experienced by a superyacht of over 60 metres is a something more exciting altogether. When a sailing yacht comes to life after months or even years of hard work, and everything works flawlessly, that is the most spectacular feeling for me as a builder.

Vitters Shipyard builds some of the world’s finest customised sailing and motor yachts, with an emphasison delivering superior quality and providing seamless support to owner and crew.

Last Thursday, the 23 metre chase boat, called Stargazer, was launched at Vitters Shipyards in the Netherlands. This large classic lined motorboat, intended as a tender for a sailing superyacht, is a unique concept. One of the key tasks of this vessel is to get guests and owner from ashore to the yacht in comfort and to visit shallow diving areas. During this project, the Dutch shipyards Vitters and Claasen combined their efforts to build this motorboat. It is the first time the two sister companies worked together on a new build project.

Stargazer was designed by Hoek Design Naval Architects. Hoek Design was responsible for all naval architecture, structural engineering, exterior and interior design of Stargazer. This is the 27th project on which Claasen and Hoek Design have collaborated. André Hoek, owner of Hoek Design, tells passionately about the design: “It is a timeless and classic design which perfectly fits the style of the mothership. This motorboat differs from all other tenders, which definitely makes it a unique project.”

The concept of the yacht is designed around several purposes the yacht needs to fulfil:
    - To transport guests from shore to mothership.
    - To serve as a diving platform that goes into small lagoons and shallow areas where people can comfortably go in and out of the water using a large swim platform in the stern that forms steps underwater when deployed.
    - To be able to hold extra stores onboard.
    - To accommodate extra crew or guests in the three cabins onboard the yacht.

The owner wanted the boat to have a Pacific range, meaning she is able to be powered by engines underway for 900 miles at cruising speed. The boat was designed with two 912 hp SCANIA engines to drive fixed propellers for a cruising speed of 15 knots and a top speed of 25 knots.

The yacht was built to superyacht standards as far as performance, finish, styling, details and technical installations are concerned. The lightweight aluminium hull was built in the Netherlands and all technical installations and joinery work have been executed by the Dutch shipyards.

During the entire process, the owner has been represented by Taco Zwarts from TZ Technical Support. In 2015, Taco relocated to Palma de Mallorca and started TZ Technical Support. He has been assisting many yachts in solving technical issues, organising service work and repairs and managing refits and new builds.
