Staying small when you’re big
“When owners visit AMELS here in Vlissingen, they very quickly note the yard’s unique atmosphere, the sense of calm determination. Even though we are very busy, things run in a smooth and well organised way. But AMELS has always been much more than that. There is something extra which draws on the centuries of shipbuilding excellence here on the North Sea. We work on very large, very complex superyachts, but we get on with things in an uncomplicated, easy-going way. Even though we are the largest superyacht facility in the Netherlands and part of one of the world’s largest shipbuilding groups, in our mentality we still prefer to work like a small yard. says Rob Luyendijk Managing Director at AMELS.
A superyacht is only the beginning
The reason AMELS has become the largest Dutch superyacht builder is because we know it's not just about the yacht, it's about creating the opportunity for shared experiences and wonderful memories with your loved ones.
Rob Luijendijk: “As Managing Director, I am tempted to say that this cascades down from the top, but in fact it often feels like the other way around. It’s the feeling of determination I get when I’m here that keeps me going during my travels all over the world. Everyone at the yard knows that their role is important. This is why, when we deliver a yacht – whether it’s a new build or a refit project – we celebrate that achievement as a team, from the lead engineer to the superstructure cleaners. You can only promise the absolute highest quality if you know that every weld, every component, every finish has been applied with absolute pride in your craftsmanship.”

On 31 October the first DAMEN SeaXplorer luxury expedition yacht emerged from her building hall in the Netherlands. When the 62-metre custom-designed yacht is handed over to her owners in early 2020, she will be the first delivery from the DAMEN SeaXplorer range offered by yacht builder AMELS and DAMEN.
The 62-metre SeaXplorer is a customised design with naval architecture completed by Damen’s inhouse design team and exterior lines by Azure Yacht Design. The owners selected Carlo Torre of Monaco Yacht Temptation to create the interior design and the Fraser technical team to supervise the build.
The Polar Class yacht has expedition facilities for 30 days of autonomy, a fully certified helideck and helicopter hangar, plus two large tender garages and a dive store. The power generation consists of a Siemens BlueDrive system with three variable speed generator sets and DC bus. In combination with electrical propulsion motors and a battery pack, the yacht has an economical and environmentally friendly configuration.
Outfitting of the DAMEN SeaXplorer yacht took place at the Vlissingen East yard, located just a few kilometres from the yacht builder’s Vlissingen City yard where AMELS yachts are completed.
The DAMEN SeaXplorer range was introduced in 2015, a crossover innovation created by a top team of experts including the SeaXplorer design team, the Damen Research Laboratory, Azure Yacht Design and EYOS Expeditions, who provided hundreds of operational design features based on their real-world expedition experience.
