A spectacular feeling
Jan-Berend van der Heide, foreman at Vitters Shipyard, has a passion for sailing yachts that is and has always been reflected in every aspect of his life.
“My grandpa was a boat builder in the village of Heeg, Friesland. I spent my childhood between the oak hulls at his yard. We built my first rowing dinghy when I was seven, and as soon as I was old enough he helped me upgrade it with a mast and a sail. This was the beginning of my love affair with sailing and the construction of sailing boats, which I have fully indulged during my work at Vitters. One of my favourite things is passing on my knowledge to the next generation of craftsmen at the yard.
I learned about the forces endured by normal sailing boats a long time ago, but working with the loads experienced by a superyacht of over 60 metres is a something more exciting altogether. When a sailing yacht comes to life after months or even years of hard work, and everything works flawlessly, that is the most spectacular feeling for me as a builder.

It was the first day of her second ever regatta, and 32.64metre Ribelle (build by Vitters Shipyard) served up Superyacht Cup Palma spectators an impressive sight. Competing in Class A against fellow Vitters build, Inoui, Ribelle looked cool, calm and collected as she sliced through the waters of the Bay of Palma. The breeze built to approximately 10 knots at the start line with patchy conditions confronting the fleet throughout the afternoon as they took on course 4.
Strikingly-modern Ribelle, which is crafted in carbon and titanium, rounded mark one and two first and proved to all watching she doesn’t just look impressive, she’s got the performance to match. By the finish line she was neck and neck with seasoned campaigner, Inoui, crossing the line just 35 seconds before the 33.4-metre which has become a favourite on the regatta circuit.
Ribelle’s designer, Malcolm McKeon has been excited the yacht’s performance on the course. Her lightweight design, and carbonfibre hull and superstructure were specifically designed to make her a competitive yacht that also exhibits ultra-comfort, and she delivered that in spades with her second placing at her first regatta; the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta.
“Designed for experienced owners who wanted a performance boat with all the comforts of a world cruising yacht, Ribelle was borne from a considerably larger concept but scaled down to something more manageable,” says her designer, Malcolm McKeon.
“The outcome was a unique looking yacht of which the most striking feature, apart from the vast amount of glass in the deck saloon canopy, is a chine running the entire length of the topsides. Her performance expectations have been met with an excellent second place in her first regatta.”
