The founders of StormYachts have an unusual story to tell in the modern yachting industry. When establishing their new yard in 2010, Rob van Kesteren and Corné Knippels set out to carve a new segment for 15 to 25-metre motorboats with the same quality level as the finest superyachts. Their target group was owners who appreciate enduring value in terms of the timeless physical qualities of their motoryachts and the emotional attachment they feel every time they step on board. The number of these all-aluminium motorboats would be strictly limited in order to maintain the purity of the StormYachts brand, with the yard only accepting orders from clients who share their philosophy.

True craftmanship and innovation
Wait, you mean StormYachts actually turns down potential orders? “Yes,” says Rob, “we have said no and will continue to do so. When Corné and I embarked on this adventure we did so from a financially independent position with complete freedom to go off the beaten path. We’re not in this for the money but to bring to reality our vison of what true craftsmanship and innovation looks like in this length. And that means only partnering with owners who seek the same.”
Leveraging on our experience on the water
But how does StormYachts create enduring value? “By leveraging on our experience on the water,” says Corné. “Everyone at StormYachts understands that comfort involves far more than the choice of materials. Based on decades of actual sailing, perceptible comfort is assured by having everything in its right place and in the right dimensions. From the smart interior and aft deck layouts to the well-designed stairs and galley, from easy access to the engine room to the angle of the sofas, the know-how of her creatorscan be felt on every Storm yacht.”
StormYachts in the Netherlands has launched the Storm X-65 Wheelhouse, described by clients and commentators alike as a breath of fresh air in the watersport market. This all-aluminium round-bilge motoryacht offers a top speed of 24 knots and a remarkable degree of comfort thanks to the decades of practical sailing experience by the team behind StormYachts. They set out to create a yacht with genuine enduring value and the owners of the first X-65 are so delighted with the result that they agreed to display her at the HISWA Amsterdam in-water Boat Show from 30 August to 4 September.
During her sea trials in and around the Dutch waters, the striking design and powerful performance of the Storm X-65 attracted a great deal of attention and admiration. The yacht has showcased its extraordinary linear acceleration, offering the same degree of comfort at all speed ranges. Moreover, the actual speed can be adapted to reflect the current sea conditions without those on board even noticing.
The minimal swell generated when manoeuvring in the marina or sailing at high speed in open water is also highly impressive. Particularly notable is the remarkably low exhaust noise during mooring and unmooring, a fine example of the efficiency of the X-65’s innovative underwater body. The only reason people notice the yacht pass by or dock is due to her exceptional looks.
The X-65 is propelled by two Volvo IPS D3 1050 drives, powered by Volvo D-13 diesel engines. Each drive has a standard transmission mounted on a steerable pod unit with two counter-rotating propellers. The superior efficiency of the Volvo IPS compared with traditional drive systems offers an increased cruising speed of up to 15% for the same installed power. Combined with the FDHF hull, which has a very low resistance at all speeds, the X-65 has unusually low fuel consumption for a yacht of this weight and length.
Another reason why the X-65 is in a class of her own is the extraordinarily low noise and resonance levels throughout every part of the yacht. The exceptional interior volume for a 65-foot yacht makes owners and guests alike feel very much at home with both the saloon and the wheelhouse having the allure of a superyacht. Crucially, the arrangement of the interior layout can be adapted according to the wishes of the client.
This first X-65, for instance, is equipped with a utility room under the stairs and a gym in the owners’ cabin. Owners can also select their preferred design and decorative style, with StormYachts offering a wide selection of colours, wood structures, finishes, carpets and upholstery to meet each taste. This newly launched model features a contemporary look & feel, with a light colour scheme that is entirely in line with the owner’s taste.
This X-65 Wheelhouse has a radar mast, which can be lowered hydraulically to reduce the air draught to only 4.65 metres, providing access to the European rivers and lakes. Behind the mast, the owners can relax at flybridge level on a comfortable day bed for two people.
